Today the 5th graders, along with the entire middle school, enjoyed a visit via Zoom with Dr. Montalvo who shared her experiences working in the pharmaceutical industry. The students gleaned insight on what it's like to work in pharmaceuticals as well as the preparation required to enter the field. The students asked some great questions and are  extremely grateful that Dr. Montalvo took the time to visit with them.

In the Innovation Lab this week, our sixth graders worked to create components of a town. They discussed the concept of scale. They noted that in order for the town to be cohesive, they needed to apply a shared scale to their individual structures.

Vocabulary Competition

The 5th graders have been busy learning new words everyday as part of their ongoing vocabulary study. But how do you make learning vocabulary even more exciting than it already is? Turn it into a competition, of course!

The class used Quizlet to make virtual flashcards and then spent some time independently studying. Then they broke into teams and competed to see who could score the most points. It was a great way to learn and have fun at the same time. They were later tested on these words and everyone did very well!

The fifth grade spends many of their science classes outside, exploring nature.  This week, they went on a search for lanternfly eggs. They have been learning about invasive species in science class and how the lanternfly is an invasive species that can damage PA's trees.  In the early spring, before the eggs hatch, getting rid of the egg masses helps to cut down on the lanternfly population.  The good news is, we didn't find many egg masses on HCA's campus but the ones we did find, we scraped off the trees and crushed the eggs to save the trees!

Reminders:

  • Please provide utensils for lunch if needed

  • Please communicate with bus drivers if you are not using the bus.
