In religion class, our fifth grade students are developing their prayer lives and studying the sacraments.  Currently, Ms. Kathol begins class with a prayer called the Liturgy of the Hours, the daily prayer of the Church.  Our students are developing the habit of listening to Scripture and searching for a word or phrase that particularly speaks to them. Ms. Kathol changes the group's prayer practice every two weeks.

Here, students are working together to analyze a passage about how the Sacrament of Confirmation strengthens the gifts given at Baptism.

They also took time to reflect on when they most need God's strength in their own lives.

This was an exciting week for our 5th graders as they celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Inauguration Day. They read and then watched MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech and discussed the dreams they have for our country. Many of our 5th graders talked about dreaming of a country where everyone regularly practices compassion and kindness.

On Wednesday we read about the history of Inauguration Day and the ways in which it has changed throughout the years. We also learned about its important traditions, such as the President and Vice President taking their oaths of office and swearing allegiance to the Constitution. On Wednesday afternoon the 5th graders joined the rest of the middle school in watching the Inauguration Ceremony in the MPR. They were thrilled to witness history in the making as Vice President Kamala Harris, the first woman and person of African and South Asian descent to hold the office, was sworn in.

Fifth grade had a smooth transition back to in person learning.  We've been lucky to have such beautiful weather so that we can maximize our time outdoors!

Today was an extra special day because we celebrated the birthday of our Foundress, Cornelia Connelly.  As a part of the celebration, Ms. Kathol organized a birthday get-together for middle school students where they played "Who wants to be a Cornelianaire?" and answered fun trivia questions about Cornelia.  Did you Cornelia would have been 212 years old if she were alive today?
