This was an exciting week for our 5th graders as they celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Inauguration Day. They read and then watched MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech and discussed the dreams they have for our country. Many of our 5th graders talked about dreaming of a country where everyone regularly practices compassion and kindness.

On Wednesday we read about the history of Inauguration Day and the ways in which it has changed throughout the years. We also learned about its important traditions, such as the President and Vice President taking their oaths of office and swearing allegiance to the Constitution. On Wednesday afternoon the 5th graders joined the rest of the middle school in watching the Inauguration Ceremony in the MPR. They were thrilled to witness history in the making as Vice President Kamala Harris, the first woman and person of African and South Asian descent to hold the office, was sworn in.
